What are the inserts made of? Materials Information

What are my inserts made of?
Microfibre - a fantastic material and one that keeps your baby's bottom dry.  Microfibre absorbs liquid fast, it helps draw moisture through the lining of the nappy into itself – away from your baby's skin.  This is why if you are using a mix of insert material you should always have Microfibre on the top layer (closest to the baby's bottom). There is a downside to microfibre.  Because like a sponge it holds a lot of fluid, when it gets too full, fluid can be squeezed out. This may mean if your baby is sitting or lying down for a long time, the insert can get full and then fluid can be "squished" out and cause leaks.
It is a great idea to mix a microfibre insert with another absorbent material that holds the liquid in?

Try some of these ones….
Hemp - a natural fibre which also has fantastic absorbency qualities. Did you know? Hemp can hold about as much liquid as microfibre, BUT it holds it differently within its fibres and it doesn’t squeeze out like microfibre. Try adding a hemp inserts underneath a microfibre one to draw the moisture/overflow into the hemp insert.  One downside to hemp is that when it gets wet it tends to get quite firm – so a nappy with just hemp inserts in it can become a little hard and uncomfortable on your baby when it's full, another great reason to use a Microfibre/hemp combination.

This Microfibre/hemp combination means you get maximum absorbency as well as an incredibly trim fitting nappy. Fabrics made from hemp are hypo-allergenic and non-irritating to the skin. Hemp materials will also soften with age and with each washing. Like linen and cotton, hemp is a cool choice for summer. It breathes well. It is recommended for warm, humid climates as the fabric resists mildew and absorbs moisture.

Bamboo - Extra bamboo can be put inside your cloth nappy pocket for more absorbency and a longer lasting nappy.
The benefits of Bamboo are that Bamboo is antibacterial, its very soft so comfortable for your child, very absorbent, takes around 3x more water weight and is long lasting and robust. Lasting through many children in cloth nappies.

Bamboo Charcoal
Bamboo Charcoal is a fantastic fibre, perfect for nappies! Charcoal bamboo is created by being burnt inside an oven at temperatures over 1000°C. This process creates a nano-particle called bamboo charcoal powder, which is then spun into charcoal bamboo fabric and used for products like cloth nappies and nappy inserts. Bamboo charcoal fabric has fantastic absorption properties. Bamboo Charcoal powder acts much like carbon in a filtration system. Activated particles adhere to organic waste & in turn help remove it – this means your nappies will be cleaner thanks to the bamboo charcoal. Check out our That's so Baby range.

The insides of the nappy cover - what materials is that made of?
Most pocket nappies have a PUL (waterproof material) outer and don’t require a cover.

Inside the nappy (next to your babies skin) there may be a range of materials depending on the brand….
MICROFIBRE NAPPIES are made from polyester fleece and are the quick-dry nappies of the washable world. Like a fleece jumper they come out of the washer almost dry.
WOOLEN NAPPIES are made with wool and microfleece. A wool mix outer with a soft microfleece inner that sits against the skin - no lanolising required. These nappies are machine washable and can be tumble dried. These nappies generally need a waterproof cover.
BAMBOO NAPPIES are slightly more expensive however they are much more absorbent than cotton, less bulky and silky soft. Bamboo fabric is made from the pulp of bamboo grass a natural textile that is eco-friendly.
Bamboo used to produce fabrics is easily replenished and does not require pesticides to grow.

BAMBOO CHARCOAL NAPPIES Bamboo charcoal is excellent at keeping smells at bay – perfect for absorbing the ‘wee’ smell and because it is super absorbent it also helps keep babies bottom very dry. It’s Grey charcoal colour also means stains don’t show like they sometimes do on other fabrics.
Did you know? Bamboo is considered one of the most sustainable plants because it grows quickly and does not require chemicals or irrigation, and biodegrades more quickly than oil-based synthetics.
Bamboo is
• luxuriously soft
• naturally hypoallergenic
• moisture- absorbent
• quick drying.
Bamboo also has antibacterial qualities, which bamboo fabric is able to retain, even through multiple washings. Bamboo exhibits up to a 99.8% antibacterial rate. This helps to reduce bacteria that thrive in clothing and cause unpleasant odours.
